We are pleased to announce that Dr Michelle Doran, the National Open Research Coordinator at NORF has recently joined the Open Science Monitoring Initiative (OSMI) as a member of Working Group 1 (WG1) and Working Group 2 (WG2).
About the OSMI
OSMI is a global network of professionals committed to promoting and advancing open science practices through collaboration, monitoring, and strategic initiatives. The initiative brings together a diverse group of stakeholders from across the globe to track and support the evolution of open science, providing a transparent and coordinated effort for monitoring the latest developments.
- WG1: Scoping the Needs of Open Science Monitoring – The objective of this working group is to better understand the needs of open science (OS) monitoring as the basis for the future work of the OS monitoring community.
- WG2: Understanding the Open Science Monitoring Landscape – The goal of this working group is to ensure OSMI’s better alignment with other initiatives in order to promote synergies and avoid the duplication of efforts.
The working group will scan the global landscape for OS monitoring projects, services, methods and tools.
OSMI Membership: A Global Effort
All open science stakeholders who are interested in contributing to the monitoring and evaluation of open science are invited to become members of OSMI. Members commit to actively participating in OSMI’s work, particularly by engaging in working groups, connecting with related initiatives, and attending plenary meetings.

NORF and OSMI’s Shared Goals
Action 6.2 of our National Action Plan for Open Research commits to establishing ‘a national monitoring service for open access and open research more broadly’. This initiative aims to align national monitoring efforts with international frameworks, including the European Open Science Cloud and the European Research Area Policy Agenda. Active engagement in OSMI and it’s working groups will enable NORF to play a key role in these discussions, reinforcing it’s influence in shaping the global open science landscape while ensuring Ireland remains actively involved in these critical international conversations.
