Open Educational Practices in Open Research: Synergies and Impact
Presenter: Marta Bustillo
Digital Learning Librarian, University College Dublin
Abstract
This lightning talk introduces researchers to the benefits and impact of using Open Educational Practices to disseminate and promote Open Research outputs.
Open Educational Practices have been described as “collaborative practices that include the creation, use, and reuse of OER [Open Educational Resources], as well as pedagogical practices employing participatory technologies and social networks for interaction, peer-learning, knowledge creation, and empowerment of learners.” (Cronin 2018).
OE Practices share many synergies with Open Research, including a focus on findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability of outputs, as well as collaboration with key stakeholders in knowledge co-creation. When research outputs, particularly those outside the traditional research article (such as toolkits, handouts, infographics, mobile applications, etc.) are published as OER, they potentially have a wider reach that helps promote public engagement in research and innovation. This talk will introduce key concepts in open education, and provide practical tips on how to apply OE practices during the creation of open research outputs, with a focus on reusability; licensing and copyright; and content co-creation.
