NORF welcomes the revision of the National Policy Statement on Ensuring Research Integrity in Ireland by the National Research Integrity Forum (NRIF), published in December 2024. The statement was first published in 2014.
Research integrity relates to the performance of research to the highest standards of professionalism and rigour, and to the accuracy and integrity of the research record in publications and elsewhere. Irish research institutions and organisations adopting this new national policy statement will make commitments to foster and ensure research integrity in a positive and proactive manner. This includes promoting good research practices and allocating resources and necessary infrastructure to support research integrity.
The new statement aligns with national and EU policies, including Ireland’s National Action Plan for Open Research 2022–2030, prepared by NORF under Impact 2030: Ireland’s Research and Innovation Strategy to guide the development of open research policies in Ireland.
The statement highlights key principles from the National Action Plan which underline the importance of good research data management across all stages of the research process and recommend the use of Data Management Plans (DMPs) by researchers and research teams, along with the adoption of the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data principles in Ireland.
