ABOARD are delighted to present the Summary Report of the ABOARD Self-Assessment Survey for Researchers in Ireland in relation to researchers’ openness to and appetite for change in relation to Open Research and Responsible Research Assessment practices.

The survey attracted responses from 193 researchers in 18 institutions across Ireland, with relatively even and representative participation across different career stages and academic fields.

The results show that awareness levels of Open Research practices among researchers are generally high, but that the implementation of those practices is perceived as low and fragmented: it varies significantly across, and even within institutions and is generally not well aligned with institutional incentivisation practices.

This survey for researchers was one component of ABOARD’s self assessment work package and has been complemented with a similar survey for funding institutions, which will be published in due course.

Together, these formed the basis for a series of collective intelligence workshops (held between March and May) and other consultation activity. In the next step, the ABOARD team will prepare a set of declarative statements, a position paper and policy recommendations on Open Research and Responsible Research Assessment practices in Ireland.

An ABOARD capstone conference at which these outputs will be presented will be held in early 2026 – more details will be shared over the coming months.
