Lightning Talk Session 1: Establishing a Culture of Open Research

AGAPE – Building an Open Science Practicing Community

Presenter: Cassandra Murphy

PhD. Researcher, Dept. of Psychology, Maynooth University and Agape Open Science Community Founding Member

Abstract

Agape is an open science community for early-career researchers, built by early-career researchers. This community was the passion project of students who took part in the Opening Doors H2020 course which focused on Open Science and Collaboration. As the course drew to a close some students were yearning for more as they did not believe they had reached the end of their open science education. The like-minded group united to conceive an online, easily accessible, and free Introduction to Open Science course. The content of this has been drawn from their individual expertise and newfound knowledge. Following the creation of the course it became evident that there was ample room to facilitate the exchange of experiences among those interested in and currently practicing Open Science. The experience of creating the course was a unique and positive example of knowledge exchange in this area, and our first community effort. We will share our learnings from this journey along with our aims and goals as we try to encourage others to join us.

About

Agape is an open science community built for early career researchers by early career researchers. Under Agape, we aim to disseminate open science between PhD students and early career researchers across Ireland, eventually taking this mission internationally. We want to create a safe open science practising community for early career researchers where we can learn, exchange our opinions and experiences, and together change the future of science. We aim to do this in the way that science is undertaken, made freely available, and communicated in a FAIR and transparent way. Cassie is one of the founding members of the community and is a current PhD researcher at Maynooth University focusing on Environmental Psychology on the GoGreenRoutes project.
