On 17 January, the Criminal justice Open Research Dialogue (CORD) Partnership launched in Maynooth. Sixty people attended the day-long event, entitled Co-creating our principles and exploring the criminal justice sector’s open research needs.

The participants were all members of the CORD Partnership from a range of different professional backgrounds. They included academic and independent researchers, criminal justice policymakers, agencies and oversight bodies, non-state justice services, civil society and advocacy groups, and research infrastructure.

The purpose of the CORD Partnership, funded by Ireland’s National Open Research Forum (NORF) under the Open Research Fund Call 2023, is to embed a culture of interdisciplinary open research in criminal justice in Ireland. This was the first of three workshops to run in 2024, and had four aims: to build relationships and understanding within the Partnership; to discuss and agree a set of principles for the Partnership; to explore the ‘What’, ‘Why’ and ‘How’ of the Partnership; and to consider the sector’s open research needs. Workshop participants shared ideas and reviewed co-produced text to be included in a forthcoming open authorship article about the Partnership’s establishment.

The workshop was facilitated using a combination of restorative practices and techniques from the field of design innovation. We are very grateful to colleagues who aided in the design and facilitation of the event, and to colleagues who provided research assistance.

The CORD Partnership is coordinated by Dr. Ian Marder (Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology), in collaboration with a consortium of partners from Maynooth University (Dr. Kevin Wozniak, School of Law and Criminology), Dublin City University (Prof. Yvonne Daly, School of Law and Government, and Dr. Darragh McCashin, School of Psychology), Dr. Fionnuala Brennan (South East Technological University, School of Humanities) and Prof. Jennifer Schweppe (University of Limerick, School of Law).
