On February 7, Dr Michelle Doran, representing the National Open Research Forum (NORF), participated in the ‘Open Source and Open Research’ panel at the National Open Source Innovation Summit (NOSIS) 2025. The event brought together business, government, and academia to discuss how open source can shape Ireland’s innovation strategy, addressing its role, opportunities, and the necessary skills needed.
The panel, moderated by Michael Meagher of the Open Ireland Network, also featured contributions from Prof Noel O’Connor of INSIGHT and Malvika Sharan of the Alan Turing Institute.
Dr Doran provided context on open research (OR), emphasising the role of open source in promoting transparency and reproducibility. She discussed Ireland’s response to the global OR movement, through the establishment of NORF. She then outlined the National Action Plan for Open Research and it’s ongoing review this year to ensure progress toward it’s goals. Additionally, Dr Doran highlighted the inclusion of open source initiatives in France’s National Action Plan and underscored the importance of supporting open source policies.
