As part of developing a National Action Plan for open research, Ireland’s National Open Research Forum (NORF) is consulting with stakeholder groups to better understand requirements and support for transitioning to Open Access models of dissemination. NORF will hold a workshop with Irish academic publishers and other stakeholders to explore publishing practices across disciplines as well as models and infrastructure for Open Access publishing. Featuring a presentation on good practice from international peers as well as a panel discussion with Irish scholarly publishers, the workshop aims to explore how to move Irish academic publishing practice towards an inclusive and sustainable OA publishing landscape.
The workshop will begin with a brief presentation by Sami Syrjämäki (Head of Publishing) and Janne Pölönen (Head of Planning) from the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies on their work to support Finnish scholarly publishers.
This will be followed by a panel discussion of the challenges and opportunities faced by scholarly publishers in Ireland, with contributions from:
- John Doyle (Founding Chair of the Editorial Board, DCU Press)
- Ruth Hegarty (Managing Editor, Royal Irish Academy)
- Fiona Morley (Head of Digital Programmes and Information Systems at Maynooth University Library, Library Association of Ireland Library Publishing Group)
- Hannah Wilson (Associate Publisher, F1000Research, HRB Open Research)
The presentation and panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A session.
The purpose of this workshop is to obtain a more detailed overview of practices of scholarly publishing in Ireland, focusing on the areas of OA infrastructure, sustainability and policy. The discussions will contribute to a policy brief being developed by NORF on support for diverse publishing practices (bibliodiversity) in the Irish landscape.
