On Tuesday, 10 June 2025, the PublishOA Landscape Report was officially launched at the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. The event provided an opportunity for participants to explore the report’s findings, discuss the future of scholarly publishing in Ireland, and connect with others working in the area of open access.
Overview of the Report
The PublishOA Landscape Report (accessible on Zenodo via this link) maps the current state of scholarly publishing across Ireland. It assesses the sector’s preparedness to transition to open access, with a particular focus on Diamond Open Access models, which do not charge fees to either readers or authors.
“The scholarly publishers, authors and readers of Ireland gave generously of their time to build a comprehensive snapshot of the publishing landscape. I’m delighted to be publishing this report which not only has useful resources, such as a directory of publishers and national guidelines, but also presents policymakers with a practical set of recommendations enable publishers to achieve their open access goals.” – Ruth Hegarty, Project Lead and Managing Editor, Royal Irish Academy
Project Background
The report is a key output of the PublishOA project, a collaboration between the Royal Irish Academy and Trinity College Dublin’s Long Room Hub. The project was funded by the National Open Research Forum (NORF), with support from the Higher Education Authority and the Government of Ireland.
The findings are intended to inform discussions and decisions about the development of open access publishing practices in Ireland.
